Education

OUR LEGACY: EDUCATION
Now, more than ever in our nation’s history, a strong education is the foundation for individual and community success. To compete in today’s economy we need an educated work-force, with essential skills and a comprehensive base of knowledge that can be applied and built upon in a variety of fields. Jobs require knowledge. Knowledge requires education.  Good educational systems require community commitment, strong leadership and appropriate resources. Good educational systems produce strong, effective learners and leaders.

We must work to improve student success. Too many of our students end up on the wrong side of the achievement gap.  In order to reach our educational goals we must  start early,  with consistent follow up. Strong policies, effective, evidence-based strategies, hard work and adequate resources can help turn around our struggling schools and communities. These same methods will also enhance those schools and communities where student success is strong, but there is still more work to be done.

I have worked in the education policy arena for more than twenty-five years, and have been at the forefront of education reform within Pennsylvania. When in Congress, I will continue this work to improve our schools, students and  communities.

As your Congresswoman, I will work on the following solutions to address the educational needs of our communities and to help achieve better outcomes:

  • Advocating for national initiatives to attract and retain talented teachers to our communities.
  • Introducing International Baccalaureate Programs to our local schools, so that our  students have the opportunity to compete at the highest levels, both locally and nationally.
  • Expanding access to community colleges and technical training programs within our state, so that our students and adult learners have the opportunity to use these valuable resources to obtain affordable, entry-level college courses, skilled trades development, remediation and general education credit.
  • Ensuring that student loans are offered at affordable rates and that grants are available to offset certain costs of higher education.
  • Continuing to support full-day kindergarten and early childhood education within our schools.
