Sheila Cherfilus- McCormick

has spent the last decade lobbying at Capitol Hill to drive positive change in Health Care Reform. As the innovative CEO of a company that provides home-based continued medical care; teaches families how to care for their loved ones; and provides vocational training in the medical field, Sheila has seen first-hand the hardship our families are experiencing without access to affordable care. And she’s proud of the work her company has done to tackle the issue. But Sheila’s family is her proudest achievement. Her husband, Corlie McCormick, is the founding member of the McCormick Law Firm where he fights to protect victims of discrimination from illegal and unfair treatment. Together, they have a blended family of two teenage children. But life wasn’t always like this.

Before joining forces with her husband, Sheila was a single mother for twelve years. During that time, she raised her daughter alone while completing course work towards a Master’s in Business Administration and putting herself through law school. And with her daughter’s learning disability, Sheila was told her daughter would never be able to attend a regular school. Out- of- pocket medical expenses piled up. But together, they persisted in the face of adversity.

Sheila is also a first generation American. Her mother moved to the U.S. at the young age of 16 and worked as a maid at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel to put herself through college and her father moved from the Dominican Republic after completing medical school. They instilled in her the core values that have guided her as a mother, wife, and business owner: Servant Leadership, Integrity, and Compassion.

While pursuing an education in Political Science at Howard University, her leadership in the Haitian Student Association helped promote awareness and visibility of Haitian history, culture and traditions.  She is proud of her culture and will ensure everyone has the right to pursue their American Dream.

Sheila is a proud graduate of Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory in Hollywood, Florida. From 2005 to 2007, she completed extensive coursework toward an MBA from the University of Maryland University College. Prior to, she attended Howard University and obtained a Bachelor of Science. An alumnus of St. Thomas University School of Law, she graduated with a Juris Doctor in 2010. While there, she was the Quarter Finalist in the Federal Bar Association Moot Court Competition, a competitor in the National Criminal Procedure Tournament hosted by University of San Diego School of Law, and was recognized as Best Oralist at the St. Thomas University School of Law Moot Court Competition.
